The only negative I came across was with the difficulty progression. Small touches like the coral growth add some eye candy while also emphasizing the decay of Rapture. There is enough variation in the colour palette within and between levels to keep it interesting. The levels also benefit from excellent visual design. The general choice of locales also enhances the effect of immersion as they feel a good match for having a sprawling layout in real life. These little touches go a long way in enhancing immersion. The original had far fewer of those and the increase of them is warranted. This sort of moment is ultimately inconsequential gameplay-wise, but it adds to the disgusting nature and uneasy atmosphere of Siren Alley. In the Pink Pearl, there is an event where a splicer drags off one of the prostitutes to rape her. The audio diaries return to give some colour and context to the locale, but Bioshock 2 also uses scripted sequences in more creative ways than the first. It has a bar, the Pink Pearl, the chapel, and many offshoots with meaningful content. The paradigm of this design lies in Siren Alley. This results in each level feeling substantially more content dense than the original.
The levels in Bioshock 2 follow a much more extreme version of this design philosophy, having more paths to choose from along with more depth to each path, giving the levels a very sprawling feel. The levels in the original very much followed a modular approach with multiple paths that diverge from a central room, with one path eventually opening up and leading to the end objective. The level design of Bioshock 2 is a strong evolution of the level design in the previous game.
